LFA Filmmaker's Club: Screening of documentary 'Trapped by Plastic’ and Q&A

26 February 2021, 17:30-19:00
Online

This event is exclusive to LFA Filmmakers' Club community (current LFA students and alumni).

We are thrilled to announce a screening of ‘Trapped by Plastic’ and a Q&A with Director & LFA Alumna Anny Tubbs, protagonist Mandy Barker, Chief Communications Officer at the IKEA Foundation Truus Huisman, and led by Director and Producer Manuela Maiguashca.

‘Trapped by Plastic’ is a short documentary film about Photographer Mandy Barker whose award-winning work highlights the devastating and far-reaching impact of marine plastic pollution and its harmful effects on marine life and humans.

Director Anny Tubbs was immediately drawn to Mandy’s work and style of activism. They filmed her interview in 2020 after Mandy had completed an expedition with scientists to Henderson Island (South Pacific Ocean) and some of their findings had been published.

Featuring many of Mandy’s photographs and behind-the-scenes insights that span her decade-long career, the film shows how Mandy developed a distinctive ‘call to action’ using strikingly colourful, intricate images to confront viewers with unpalatable truths.

The event will begin with a screening of ‘Trapped by Plastic’ and be followed by a lively discussion about the role different media can play in raising awareness or perpetuating complacency, nurturing dialogue or stoking conflict.  As filmmakers, we will ask: how can we create media that engages people and changes our individual and collective behaviour?

This event is a part of our LFA Filmmakers’ Club ‘Resurgence of Short Films’ series.

Join us and the inspiring all-female panel for this important conversation - not to be missed!

'Trapped by Plastic' was filmed with fellow LFA alumni Max Williams (DOP) and Marie Lingois (Line Producer), as well as Rob Eade (Sound Recordist)Tommy Rowson (Editor) was heavily involved in bringing Mandy’s stills to life. The music was composed by Konstantin Septinus.

About Mandy Barker:

Mandy Barker is an international award-winning photographer whose work involving marine plastic debris over the past 10 years has received global recognition.

The aim of my work is to engage with and stimulate an emotional response in the viewer by combining a contradiction between initial aesthetic attraction along with the subsequent message of awareness. The research process is a vital part of my development as the images I make are based on scientific fact, essential to the integrity of my work. I hope it will ultimately lead to positive action in tackling this increasing environmental problem, which is currently of global concern.
